bullet Highline Care Center participated in the MS walk in Wenatchee on April 19th. The "Humble Highline Hobblers," a group of 21 staff, residents, and family walked 2.5 to 5 miles along Wenatchee’s beautiful riverfront path. Together the group raised $2,445.50 to help the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
bullet The Idaho Press-Tribune recently ran an article entitled "Living with Dementia." The article discusses Alzheimer’s and Dementia support group meetings available in the Nampa, Idaho area. One of the meetings is held on the first Wednesday of the month at Karcher Estates Retirement and Rehabilitation Community. Support group organizers believe there are far more people in the local area struggling with dementia who could benefit from a little added support and understanding. Dementia is estimated to affect one in seven Americans age 71 and older, according to the National Institutes of Health.

bullet Mary Fenner, Environmental Service Supervisor at Colonial Vista Care Center in Wenatchee, WA was volunteered to be “arrested” by an anonymous “friend” for the “Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) LOCK-UP”. Mary was a good sport about the situation. She relied on her family, friends, co-workers and vendors to help get her released. Mary collected $535 in memory of Bobby Packwood, as wonderful young man she knew. The Wenatchee MDA Lock-Up was a success with a pledges totaling $21,082, which will benefit families in the area with neuromuscular disorders. Mary thanked everyone for their support of this project.
bullet Highline Care Center has received the Bringing Hope to Life Award from the Catholic Family & Child Services. This is the first year this new annual award. It is presented to individuals and organizations who have volunteered in the community and made a difference in other people’s lives. Highline Administrator, Jean Lehman, says one of the reasons they may have been given the award is “Highline has a very positive reputation in the community and many of our staff volunteer their time to help a variety of programs providing outreach to those in need.” Jean Lehman was presented with a statue bearing a plaque with the award and a clock at the Catholic Family and Child Services annual benefit dinner on March 13.
bullet Anne Boersma of Colonial Vista Retirement has been named the 2008 Resident of the Year by Frontier Management LLC.  A reception will be held in Ms. Boersma’s honor on May 9,  where she will be awarded the honor by Greg Roderick, president of Frontier Management.  Boersma moved into Colonial Vista Retirement in 1993, and since then she has always promoted neighborly good will,  hosted a monthly breakfast in her apartment for her hall-mates, faithfully served as a hall monitor and  has helped train and supervise many of the other resident office volunteers.

Frontier Management’s Resident of the Year Award seeks to recognize individual residents who have made an extraordinary contribution to the community as a whole over the period of the previous year. This program recognizes the achievements of an individual resident for contributions that have positively influenced the quality of life of other residents or resident’s families; improved the quality of life of people in the surrounding town or city by their actions; or improved the quality of the working environment for Frontier’s employees or their families.

Monterey Court and St. Andrews Special Care recently completed a staff training study with the research faculty at the Oregon Institute on Disability and Development, a division of the Oregon Health and Science University. The federally funded staff-training project was focused on Augmentative and Alternative Communication for persons with dementia. The study involved a number of in-service training sessions to help improve communication between staff and residents. Monterey Court and St. Andrew’s participation has contributed scientific knowledge to the improvement of care for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

bullet Heatherwood Retirement, Boise, ID was a sponsor of the Melba Community Charity Auction. They provided bingo and prizes for the children’s area of the annual auction. Heatherwood received recognition for their efforts by the Melba newspaper where it was announced that the 500 guests had donated $45,000 through the auction efforts of all sponsors.
bullet The Wenatchee World reports in their January issue of “People & Places” that Healthy Options Home Health Care in Wenatchee, Washington, has been named to HomeCare Elite, a compilation of the top 25 percent of the most successful Medicare-certified home health care providers in the United States. Maria Holt, Community Liaison states this is the second consecutive year for Healthy Options to receive this distinguished honor. Becca Davenport, RN, Administrator of Health Options states, “It is our outstanding, hardworking staff that makes this happen. I am very proud of all of them.”

bullet HomePlace Special Care at Oak Harbor, Washington participated in the South Whidbey Island Festival of Trees. A total of $54,000 was raised for the Big Brother/Big Sister organization through the auction of donated decorated trees and wreaths. The HomePlace sponsored a tree following the theme “Hidden Treasures,” which was auction at $800 for a private home in Seattle. The tree was adorned with hand decorated treasure chests, handmade by the HomePlace staff. Crowns, jewels, golden goblets and goodies filled an antique trunk, which added sparkle to the tree.

bullet The Annual Holiday Bazaar at Colonial Vista Retirement and Assisted Living, Wenatchee, WA was made more successful with Chief David selling homemade baked goods. Residents and staff also sold their homemade items. All donated a percentage of their profits, $1000 donated to the Wenatchee Domestic and Violence Crisis Center.
bullet Flake Festival photoColonial Vista is the first retirement community to take part in the Flake Festival Parade through downtown Wenatchee. Ray O’Brian, Maintenance Supervisor, dressed up like Santa while staff members bundled up to wave at the crowd from within. A great time was had by all.

bullet The Wenatchee YWCA gave awards to two people affiliated with Frontier Management. Sarah Reed won the Youth of the Year Award. This award is given to a young person who exhibits a spirit of volunteerism. Indeed, she is a volunteer at Colonial Vista Retirement and helped organize Colonial’s recent Senior Prom event. Jeannie Alvarado was awarded the Marjorie Pillsbury Scholarship. This is a prize awarded to highly recommended re-entry students. Jennie has been a nursing assistant at Highline Care Center for two years.
bullet Frontier Management, LLC was a Gold sponsor for the Portland Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. Gilman Park Assisted Living, Monterey Court Memory Care, a Bronze Sponsor and St. Andrews Care Center was represented by walkers and their donations of $3452 to this worthy foundation. This year there were a total of 1300 walkers, some representing relatives who have suffered from this dementia related disease. They represented a total of $188 thousand raised this year at the Memory walk.
bullet Fifty staff and family members from HomePlace Special Care, Burlington, WA participated in benefits leading up to the 2007 Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk.. They held basket raffles and barbeques to raise $711.

bullet A delightful “Concert Le` Musical 2007” and Silent Auction was the accumulation of many weeks of planning by staff members at the Bend, Oregon Alzheimer’s Care at Aspen Ridge and Aspen Ridge Retirement and Assisted Living. Chef Dave’s dinner was pronounced ‘fabulous’ by Administrator, John Bragg. Many local businesses and friends donated items for the Silent Auction. This event was followed by a Classic Car Show. All of the dedicated work and gracious donations accumulated $15,000 for the Bend 2007 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk held September 23.
bullet Frontier’s CEO, Greg Roderick, volunteered to be the Head Coach for Team 19 (aka: The Saints) Flag Football through i9 Sports in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Josh Roderick (age 9), Greg’s son, is a player on the team. “This was a great experience for me personally and a great way to be involved in both the life of my child as well as in the community,” stated Roderick. Greg’s daughter, Isabelle (age 5), is also involved as a Cheerleader in the program. “This is a real family event and we are having a great deal of fun together,” concluded Roderick.
