Family Appreciation and Harvest Festival
October 28, 2011

Our "Family Appreciation and Harvest Festival" was originally planned for the wood grove, but due to a cold snap we had to move the party inside. We were packed, but everyone had a great time!

We made lemonade out of lemons, had a big band, a hot dog cookout and a "reverse trick or treat" - with home health agencies bringing candy and gifts to our residents. There was also a pumpkin decorating contest and "Name our Woods" contest. Residents, guests and staff all had a GREAT time!  Everyone danced, ate and sang!

The winner of the "Name our Woods" contest is resident Leona Hawkins. Her entry of "Village Green" took top honors. We had 48 entries which is excellent participation! Mrs. Hawkins received two free lunch bunch trips and a gift certificate to our Village Store. The other nominees also received Village Store gift certificates and most exchanged them for canned goods that they immediately donated to the Longview Thanksgiving Food Drive barrel. Nice folks here!

2011 Walk to End Alzheimer's
September 2011

We had a wonderful response and participation in the local Alzheimer's Walk which was held on the beautiful LeTourneau University campus in Longview. It was a gorgeous fall day, too! We had a donuts and juice under a purple and blue tent here at the Village to get everyone organized then boarded our bus for the college.

Our "team" included 15 residents and 6 employees - our largest group ever. We provided "Colonial Village" Tshirts for our walkers and they were on the front row for the "kick off ceremony", thus being shown in all their glory on TV that evening. Great promo for our Village! Not everyone was able to actually walk but they were there to cheer others on.

In addition, we met our goal for donations and support, and more importantly, this year's "walk" raised the most money they have ever raised - $35,000!” Cherry Sikes, Executive Director of Colonial Village Retirement.

On Thursday, November 11th, Frontier Management’s COO, Matthew Dunham, and Regional VP, Brad Rowe, presented Lavern McDaniel with a plaque and special gift as they announced to a large crowd at Colonial Village in Longview, Texas that she was Frontier’s Resident of the Year for 2010.

The Executive Director of Colonial Village, Cherry Sikes, stated, “We had nominated Lavern for this special award because she has been a resident of our Village for over thirteen years and during that time she has worked tirelessly through her involvement in organizing and working in the Village Store, collecting items for the Women’s Shelter, serving on Resident Council, opening her apartment as a model to show prospective residents, making fudge for marketing efforts, helping collect for the Christmas purse to benefit employees and their children, and never failing to take time to write a personal thank you for every special event she attends.”

Many folks do not know that prior to moving to Colonial Village in 1997, Laverne was the victim of a tragic event that took the life of her husband and critically injured her. Despite all of this, she has remained upbeat and positive. “After reading countless nomination forms from all of our communities, I was truly moved when I read the nomination of Laverne McDaniel,” shared Matthew Dunham.  “After spending time with Laverne, you know why she is deserving of this honor and understand what an amazing positive influence she has on everyone around her.”

During the event, Laverne McDaniel was joined by her over 10 family members at a special recognition table adorned with a beautiful floral centerpiece.  Plus, Colonial Village’s Business Office Manager, Treva Wilcox, sang to inspirational songs with the entire crowd gathered at the event.  To top everything off, the staff prepared an incredible array of appetizers and desserts.

Frontier’s Resident of the Year award was established three years ago to highlight individual residents who have made extraordinary contributions that have improved the quality of life of other residents or the lives of people in the surrounding community, or enhanced the working environment for Frontier’s employees or their families.
